FRS Pioneer
|
The first member of our FRS family, FRS Pioneer is a chemically defined, animal component free alternative to foetal bovine serum (FBS) for broad-spectrum cell culture.
FRS Pioneer can be added to cell culture media in place of FBS to culture or cryopreserve cells without the use of any animal components or serum (i.e. 100mL of FRS™ Pioneer is equivalent to 100mL of FBS). This allows for reproducible cell culture and provides a cleaner background. To date, analyses indicate that intracellular signalling and cellular function are maintained between FBS and FRS™ Pioneer-cultured cells. SKU: FRSPI0100, FRSPI0500 or FRSPI1000
All prices are in AUD and exclude GST. Bulk pricing available upon request.

*Even with the full knowledge of the reproducibility, regulatory, and sustainability/ethical benefits associated with going serum-free, we know changing scientific processes can be intimidating. FRS Pioneer is broad-spectrum and designed to be readily inserted into your usual FBS-dependent workflows as smoothly as possible. To make it even easier, our scientific co-founder Katie offers complimentary, personalised support sessions to purchasers of FRS Pioneer to ensure your unique system's transition away from serum is smooth.
FRS Pioneer has successfully been used by external scientists to achieve:
1. Routine expansion of a broad range of immortalised cell lines (HEK, CHO, MCF7, A549, and more)
2. Cryopreservation when mixed with 10% DMSO
3. Cleaner assays (e.g. reduced cytokine background)
4. Transfection of cell lines for recombinant protein production
5. Reduction of FBS usage to 1% in nutritionally demanding primary and organoid systems
6. Optimised, serum-free media for primary cells, by adding additional cell-specific needs to FRS Pioneer
And many more applications. Please reach out directly if there is a specific application or use case you're interested in.

Adhesion and cell attachment
FRS™ Pioneer does not contain adhesion factors found in serum.
For adherent cells, attachment is handled modularly via surface choice or coatings. This allows users to select adhesion strategies appropriate to their system.
The following strategies have been effectively used with FRS Pioneer to facilitate attachment:
For adherent cells, attachment is handled modularly via surface choice or coatings. This allows users to select adhesion strategies appropriate to their system.
The following strategies have been effectively used with FRS Pioneer to facilitate attachment:
- Coating cell culture plates with serum-containing media
- Cell-specific coatings such as vitronectin, fibronectin, laminin, collagen, gelatine, or Matrigel
- Coating with GECKO™, a broad-spectrum, animal-free and chemically defined coating developed by Media City Scientific
- Coating-free workflows in which adherence proteins are added directly to the media
